Belgian duathlete Vansteelant wins World Cup Powerman

Venray, the Netherlands, Sunday 27 April 2003 -
Belgian
duathlete Benny Vansteelant has won the World Cup duathlon in Venray, the Netherlands. Vansteelant, fourfold world champion, won the Powerman for the fifht time in his career. Dutchman Huub Maas, the reigning world champion, finished second. Stefan Riesen from Switzerland was third. Vansteelant ruled from the start and had a lead of 35 seconds at the end of the 15 kilometre run. The gap to his followers Maas and Riesen increased to almost three minutes at the end of the bike section. In the final run Vansteelant consolidated his lead and finished first in 2 hours, 41 minutes, 15 seconds, leaving Maas almost 2.5 minutes behind. Riesen finished third. In the women's race the British duathlete Vicky Pincombe ruled from the start and finished in a time of 3 hours, 4 minutes and 9 seconds, with Tina Walter (Ger) in second place and Ulrike Schwalbe (Ger) in third. The race in Venray was almost cancelled by the mayor due to an infectious bird disease in the region. Finally, the organisation decided to change the bike course, which was acceptable for mayor J.
