POWERMAN Malaysia 2007. Press Release

Seri Manjung, Malaysia, 12 November 2007

It was good weather for the Elites racing here in Malaysia this year but the heat did pick up by late morning to a scorching 35 degrees celcius. The 2-lap run and cycle course gave spectators at the Majlis Perbandaran Stadium a good idea on who the leaders were throughout the race. Crispine Omondi Onyango, Kenya’s top duathlete, ITU Duathlon World Champion, Joerie Vanstealant and Miguel Capo Soler from Spain were the first three back into transition after the run. They were followed closely by Armand van der Smissen, national champion of Netherlands and Rob Woestenborghs, another strong Belgian elite. They all ran a faster 1st lap before slowing down on the 2nd lap. The Asian leader was clearly Ryan Mendoza from Philippines followed by Shahrom Abdullah, Malaysia’s top duathlete who will be representing our country at the upcoming South East Asian Games in Thailand this December. Joerie had the fastest bike split for the race at 1:27:50 for 64km, widening his lead by nearly 4 minutes after the bike leg coming into transition with a strong lead and Canadian, Luke Dragstra was trying to compensate for his run by cycling fast and hard to catch up. Armand remained a serious contender but Rob was out of the race after a flat. Shahrom tried to put some leg power into his bike but Ryan being an equally strong cyclist maintained his lead among the Asians.       It was a clear victory for Joerie who finished at 2hrs 39mins with over 5 minutes ahead of Armand who came in 2nd at 2hrs 45mins and Luke just seconds behind at 3rd placing.

1 Joerie Vansteelant Belgium  2:39:49-2 Armand Van der Smissen Netherlands  2:45:14-3 Luke Dragstra Canada  2:45:49-4 Miguel Capo Soler Spain  2:49:54

5 Oliver Mott United Kingdom  2:50:27-6 Ryan Mendoza Philippines  2:55:05-7 Shahrom Abdullah Malaysia  3:00:08-8 Wong Ah Thiam Malaysia  3:11:53

9 Glenn MacNamara South Africa  3:16:04

The Women’s race saw Erika Csomor from Hungary, Michelle Parsons from United Kingdom and Reka Brassay from Hungary defend their titles respectively. The women kept close together during the 1st run but despite Michelle clocking a slightly faster bike split, Erika who has a slightly stronger run ran her way to victory once again.                                   Our Malaysian representative, Mariana Mohamad had been preparing for her South East Asia games debut and made us proud by improving her race times from last year and also beating Analiza Dysangco from Philippines who will be one of her contenders in the upcoming December race.

1 Erika Csomor Hungary  3:07:39-2 Michelle Parsons United Kingdom  3:09:09-3 Reka Brassay Hungary  3:11:31-4 Mariana Mohammad Malaysia  3:23:51

5 Analiza Dysangco Philippines  3:34:31-6 Monica Torres Philippines  3:41:35-7 Jeanette Wang Singapore  3:42:33-8 Sally O'Dea Australia  3:48:33

Joeri Vansteelant(BEL) and Michelle Parson(GBR) win at Powerman Austria

Belgium Joerie Vansteelant , dominated the whole race, wins in a new track record with – a surprising Michelle Parson wins the woman race. Perfect weather conditions and an amazing crowd encouraged athletes to high-performance. Like last year the Belgium was in the lead from gun to the tape. “Powerman Austria is just my race with the perfect course”

The 24-year old broke the his last course record  (14km-78km- 7km) of 3:07:20  by 1 minute 53 sec. and celebrated his first win in the Powerman World Series with a time of 3:05:27. “I didn’t expect it to be faster again this year”, said the two time U23 Duathlon World Champion. “The course was hard, but the crowd was really fantastic.”

Altogether almost 1,000 participants from more than 20 nations have named themselves to take part in the various events of the Powerman race weekend. The eleventh edition of Powerman Austria with great athletes and a great atmosphere has proved to be another success for the event.”

Women´s race was really sensational. The Belgium girl Veerle Dhaese and Reka Brassey(HUN) came in first after the first run. Maria Penker(AUT), Maud Golsteyn (NED ) ,Monika Feuersinger(AUT) were looking strong as well following within around a minute. Michelle Parsons(GBR) lost 4 min. After 1 lap()38km) on the bike nothing changed except Michelle Parsons(GBR) lost time on the bike being 7 min behind the leading two Veerle Dhaese(BEL) and Reka Brassey(HUN). When she heard this she didn’t accept this as being not recovered from her 5th place at the Powerman WC last weekend. The got her killer instinct back and really kicked off showing again that the bike leg is her thing coming in Transition first with Monica Feuersinger(AUT). Michelle Parsons : “Coming in first just before Monica I just ran and ran and ran because I knew she is strong on the run”

Particpants Powerman Races are booming.

This years we see in every European Powerman a lot more participants. Not only more elite but especially the youth, all comers and company teams. Powerman Holland/Horst, Belgium/Geel, Switzerland/Zofingen and Austria/Weyer/Grossraming see it also as result of delivering the quality Duathletes and Companies want. The International Powerman Association is also in process with many new options for 2008. But the selection process requires a lot of time.

Koen Maris (BEL) and Erika Csomor (HUN) new World Champions Powerman Long Distance 2007

For Koen Maris it was a dream come true. His first Powerman World Championship. Erika Scomor is the first woman to win Powerman Zofingen four times in a row.  Koen Maris completed the race in a new record time of 6 hours 21 minutes. He beat Olivier Bernhards record, 6 hours 24 minutes and 37 seconds from 2002. Erika Csomor missed the record by 1 minue and 30 seconds. We all think the surprise of the day was Urs Dellsperger (SUI) finishing in fourth place overall at the age of 44 in a time of 6 hours, 35 minutes and 27 seconds. His best time ever. Benny Vansteelant had to stop  in leading postion and chased by Koen Maris,11km before the finish because of phycical problems..

Benny Vansteelant(BEL) and Mariska Kramer best in 2007 Powerman Geel/ ITU World Cup.

On Sunday afternoon, under excellent weather conditions( 23 C), we saw especially a lot of unexpected frontrunners in the Mensrace like Rafel Baugh(AUS ) and Russian Champion Sergey Yakolev but both did not finish. Immediate after the first run the brothers Benny and Joeri Vansteelant(BEL) showed that they are the strongest long distance Duathletes in the World, finishing 1st and 2nd. Aksel Nielsen (DEN) came in  3rd, with the fastest 2nd run, showing he is ready for his first WC Powerman in Zofingen(SUI) on August 25.

Mariska Kramer(NED) is back. In the womens race Mariska Kramer did her first race after a hip operation 3 month ago. For the first time in years she had a "painless" race. Her running is just too strong for the other women. Michelle Felsing(DEN) was close to her first Powerman victory, coming of the bike 1st. Michelle Parson(GBR) was of course the fastest on the bike but could not make a serious gap. Michelle Parsons(GBR) showed to be ready for the WC Powerman with a good 2nd run and finished 3rd.

Alisha Lion and David Thompson Capture the Overall Wins at the 12th Annual Powerman Alabama

Irondale, AL -- Epic.  That is the word used by professional triathletes, Josiah Middaugh and Alisha Lion to describe the 12th annual Powerman Alabama Duathlon held Sunday, April 15, 2007 in Irondale, AL, a suburb of Birmingham.  Undoubtedly everyone else who competed in this year’s race will agree.  This year athletes faced temperatures in the upper 30s and low forties, but that wasn’t the worst part.  There was also the occasional brief rain storm that came through the area.  Cold and wet don’t make for a fun combination when riding a bike, but even the rain could be tolerated.  The icing on the cake for Mother Nature this year was the unrelenting wind.  Along with the challenging rolling hills on the course, racers had to face wind gusts up to 45 mph.  All who competed will remember the wind.

Luckily the cold, rain and wind held off long enough on Saturday for some younger competitors to show their skills.  New to Powerman Alabama weekend this year were the PowerKids Duathlon and the Irondale Presidential Fitness One Mile Kids Run.  Twenty-seven children ages five to thirteen competed in the PowerKids races which ranged in distances for three different age categories.

Over 500 racers were part of the Powerman Alabama weekend events.  Participants came from twenty-two states and five different countries.  27% of the racers were women and 73% were men.  The most represented age categories were 35-39 years and 40-44 years respectively.

The 2007 Powerman Alabama race was a world qualifier for the 2007 Short Course Duathlon World Championship being held in Gyor, Hungary on May 20, 2007.

Professional Men
David Thompson of St. Paul, MN won the professional men’s race with a time of 2:16:31.  Powerman Alabama’s 2005 and 2006 champion Tom Jeffrey of Richmond, VA was just six seconds behind Thompson taking the 2nd place prize.  Birmingham’s own Ty Stanfield turned in an outstanding performance finishing 5th overall in his second year competing at the professional level.

Professional Women

While the women’s race was exciting in its own rights, it wasn’t quite as nail biting as the men’s.  Alisha Lion of Holly Springs, NC was the first female finisher with a time of 2:37:57, nearly five minutes faster than her nearest competitor.  Birmingham’s home-town female pro athlete Deanna Frank had a stellar race again this year finishing 4th overall in the pro women’s field.

Amateur Winners

Amy Kloner of Norcross, GA repeated her victory as top amateur female, winning with a time of 2:47:17.  The top amateur male was Eric Bell of Knoxville, TN with a time of 2:22:41.

In the shorter distance Whistlestop Duathlon held along with Powerman, the winners were Lisa Marshall of Alpharetta, GA and Clayton Tillery of Cumming, GA.

The next Team Magic race of the year is the new Alabama Coastal Triathlon which will be held Sunday May 6, 2007 in Orange Beach / Gulf Shores, AL.

April 12                                        Team Magic geared up for the 12th Annual Powerman Alabama

April 15, 2007 – Irondale, Alabama

Team Magic, Inc. is gearing up for another great year for Powerman in the USA in 2007.   The 2007 Powerman Alabama has been selected as a world championship qualifier for the 2007 Short Course Duathlon World Championship, being held in Gyor, Hungary on May 20, 2007. Powerman Alabama and the Whistlestop duathlon qualify the top 10 percent or top finisher (whichever is greater) in each age-group for the USAT National Triathlon Championship on June 30th in Portland, Oregon.Powerman Alabama is one of two USA races in the Powerman International Duathlon Series and qualifies our participants for the series finale in Zofingen Switzerland in August of 2007.

Powerman Professional Racers Meet With Irondale Youth to Talk Fitness – Friday, 2 pm

International professional racer Glenn Macnamara of South Africa and Birmingham’s local professional female racer Deanna Frank will conduct a talk about fitness and multisport with Irondale youth at the Irondale Community School on 16th Street in Irondale on Friday at 2 pm to kick off race weekend.

NEW in 2007, the City of Irondale and Jefferson County are supporting Team Magic to host a Youth One Mile Fitness Run and PowerKids Duathlon on Saturday open to all youth 14 and under.

Proceeds of the Fitness Run benefit the Irondale Community School programs.

About the Races

The Powerman Alabama Duathlon weekend started twelve years ago with the Whistlestop Duathlon – named for the internationally famous Irondale Café – known to movie goers as the Whistlestop Café.  The race drew international media exposure when top professionals arrived to compete for a then rare professional prize purse.  The following year Team Magic was invited to host one of a series of International duathlons that qualify racers for the mecca of duathlon in Switzerland.  Today, both races live on and continue to host the largest number of racers in duathlon in the USA.

The Powerman race distance is an 8k run, 53k bike, and 8k run.  The Whistlestop Duathlon is half that distance and welcomes more new comers, recreational racers and short course specialists.

Team Magic thanks our host city of Irondale and host county Jefferson County for making this event possible.  Other local sponsors include Birmingham Coca Cola, Bike Link, Max Bynum, Tracy’s Cafeteria, and the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Saturday PowerKids and running races begin at 10:00 am and will conclude by 11:30 am.

Sunday races begin at 7:30 am and will conclude by 12:30 pm.

All races are staged from the Irondale Community School on 16th Street in Irondale.

The professional racers are vying for a $5000 cash purse.

2006 winner Tom Jeffrey of Richmond, VA is back for another win, although his competition is stiff with USA’s Josh Beck coming off of a fresh win at the most recent USA duathlon in Virginia.  Locals are also looking to Birmingham professional racer Tyler Stanfield to put on a good show.

Local professional Deanna Frank has a great chance for victory coming off a 2nd place position at this race in 2006.

Race results will be available Sunday evening at www.team-magic.com
