Benny Vansteelant left us.

Dear friends of the Benny and the Duathlonsport,

I am shocked. Yesterday morning, when I was in London, I received the sad news that our Benny left us.

It’s hard to express all my feelings and I am sure a lot of you will feel the same.

We all have many memories of Benny. Therefore I suggest: 

You mail me something you will like to say……………….and I will hand

it over to the family to support them in this hard moment and for the times to come.

We will also prepare a special page on www.powerman.org. www.pwoerman.org

Dear Powerman Family, athletes, organisers and friends

On Friday September 14 the family Vansteelant received a booklet with all the words and foto's  I received from all over the world.

On behalf of the Family Vansteelant: "Many thanks, this helps  a lot in these hard moments". Many thanks also to all of you, we were there with many, who came to the funeral.

Benny is and always will be in our memories

We hebben samen vele mooie en, zoals het leven is, ook minder mooie momenten beleefd. Topsport is een leven zonder compromissen. Jij wist dat en leefde er ook naar. Duathlon was jouw sport en je leven.

Together we had many beautiful moments and , just the way life is, also less beautiful moments.

World class sport is a way of living with no compromises. You knew that and adapted  your every day life to it. Duathlon was your sport and your life.

Ik heb je de eerste keer gezien bij het WK in Guernica (ESP) in 1997 waar ik samen met de Ozzies was. Jonathan Hall werd toen wereldkampioen.

Echter jij, Benny Vansteelant uit België, was de enige athleet die er voor mij echt uit sprong.  Je werd wereldkampioen bij de junioren en dat bij je eerste echte internationale wedstrijd. Ik ben toen meteen naar je ouders gegaan en heb gevraagd of jij bij onze Powerman Holland in 1998 wilde starten.

” Benny gaat een athleet worden waarvan iedereen later trots zal vertellen dat hij bij onze wedstrijd aan de start was”. Hij won niet in 1998 maar wel in 1999. Je moeder zei nog tegen mij dat ik het een jaar te vroeg had voorspeld. In 2000 werd je Wereld Kampioen Duathlon in Zuid-Afrika. Er zouden nog vele kampioenschappen en grote overwinningen volgen.

I saw you for the first time at the Worlds in Guernica (Spain) in 1997 where I was together with the Ozzies.  Jonathan Hall became World Champion of the Elite.

However you, Benny Vansteelant from Belgium, were the revelation of  these World Championships. You became the Junior World Champion in your first real international race. What a performance!

Immediately  I went to your parents and asked them to have you at the start line of 1998 Powerman Holland.

“One day Benny will be THE athlete to be proud of having in your race”.

He did not win in Holland in 1998 but in 1999. Your mother told me at that moment that I predicted your victory a year too early. In 2000 you became WC ITU Powerman Duathlon Long Distance in South Africa. After that many more Championships and World Class victories followed.

In 2000, na afloop van het WK, kwamen we bij elkaar met alle topatleten om de eerste Duathlon atleten commissie op te richten om van nu af aan samen met de organisatoren en de athleten onze sport beter en mooier te maken.

In 2000, after the WC race, we had a meeting with all World Class athletes to found the first Athletes Duathlon Committee. Organizers and athletes together wanted to improve duathlon and bring it to a higher level.   

Je was een persoonlijkheid die voor iedereen een luisterend oor had en ook een genuanceerde eigen mening. Of het nu over trainingsvormen, eetpatronen, parcoursen, stayeren, atletenondersteuning of de gewone dingen van alle dag ging.

You were a personality with a ready ear for everybody and always prepared  to give your motivating opinion. No matter what subject: training drills, nourishment, routes, drafting, athletes support or just the ordinary things.

Je was een deel van ons leven en wij waren een deel van jouw leven en dat vonden we samen de moeite waard. Je werd een voorbeeld voor velen en een ambassadeur voor de onze sport “Duathlon” en de Powermanwedstrijden over de gehele wereld .

You were a part of our life and we were part of yours and together we thought it worth living for. You became an example for many and an ambassador for our sport Duathlon and  the Powerman events all over the world.

Benny in jouw korte turbulente leven heb je veel bereikt en onuitwisbare herinneringen nagelaten voor ouders, broer, zus, familie, vrienden, duathleten, ander sporters over de hele wereld, “de Powerman familie” en voor vele anderen waarvan je wellicht niet bewust was. Dat onbewuste is vooral de afgelopen week heel duidelijk geworden op allerlei mogelijke manieren…………dit had je zelf eigenlijk moeten kunnen beleven. Het is ongelooflijk dat jouw omgeving nu ziet hoeveel mensen wél weet hebben gehad van je ongelooflijke prestaties en er niet eerder echt iets meegedaan hebben.  

Benny you achieved a lot in your short tempestuous life and left behind unforgettable memories.

For your parents, brother, sister, family, friends, duathletes, other sporty people all over the world, the whole Powerman family and for many others of whom you might not be aware of.  That unawareness became obvious especially this last week one way or they other…. Actually you should have been able to witness and experienced this . It is unbelievable that it isn’t until now that your acquaintances /environment see how many people knew of you and recognized your incredible achievements. But did not really do something with it. 

In dit boekje heb ik reacties en foto’s die ik  gekregen heb van sporters, organisaties en vrienden van de afgelopen week om aan de familie Vansteelant te geven verzameld als blijvend herinnering aan jou.

In this booklet I have collected all  the photos and nice words I received from duathletes, organizers and friends to pass it to the Family Vansteelant as an ever lasting memory of you.   

Benny rust in vrede…we zullen je nooit vergeten en in jouw geest verder gaan
