Jonathan's sporting career started at the
age of 10 as a runner and since that time he has progressed to reach the top
of the elite level in the two sports he has dedicated himself to, Cycling and
Duathlon.
As a cyclist Jonathan made his debut in Australian colours as a senior in
1991 at the age of 18. After spending a further two seasons in 93/94 with the
AIS and National team Jonathan retired from cycling. After racing three full seasons in Europe and gaining selection for
the Victoria Commonwealth Games in 94 Jonathan felt that he had done all he
could to make the next step into the European professional ranks but could not
see the opening to gain access to this very competitive world.
Going back to his roots of running and Duathlon was the next step and
after the intitial hurdles including serious injury Jonathan was able to quickly
establish himself as Australia’s number
one Duathlete in 1995 and make the subsequent breakthrough into the
international arena. After two failed attempts Jonathan achieved a life long
goal and won a World Championship in Duathlon in 1997.
While training for the Duathlon World Championship in 97 a second
opportunity arrived to race as a cyclist and acknowledging that second chances
are few and far between Jonathan grasped it with both hands. Retiring from
Duathlon after reaching the very top was a calculated risk but one that proved
to be well taken. With maturity, good luck, results and contacts Jonathan signed
his first professional cycling contract in 1998 with the then number one team in
the world Festina.
Things in the professional world were different to what Jonathan expected
and after various bad luck including a car accident in which he broke his ankle
he left Europe in 2000 to chase a cycling career in the USA. The boom in cycling
with the whole Lance phenomenon in the US lead to a lucrative contract but by
mid 2001 having never turned a pedal the team folded and Jonathan was again left
to decide whether to retire or give the Duathlon one last fling. Personal
reasons were the main reason to return and his return has been steady and
measured.
In March 2002 Jonathan returned to the winners circle after a solid
victory in the Dannon Duathlon series opener in Florida. Backing this up with a
course record breaking win in Japan in May has put Jonathan back to where he
left off in 97. The business end of the 2002 season is still to come and after
spending four years away from running it will be interesting to see if Jonathan
can attain another Duathlon World Championship, he motivating force at present.
2002 saw Jonathan involved with 23 Degrees Sports Management in Spain.
This involved organising the local end of the Vuelta España Camps run by CTS in
the USA. Planning and organising the logistics of these camps are skills which
Jonathan has developed through the years of racing and travelling whilst
competing as a professional athlete, one of the many positive life skills that
11 years of competition have given
In 2003 Jonathan again based himself in Spain and continued to focus on
Duathlon. Cycling / Cyclismo :
